Devon and Cornwall
Counties: Devon, Cornwall.
Principal towns: Exeter, Torquay, Plymouth, Truro, Penzance, Newquay.
A favorite holiday spot for British families, Devon and Cornwall can be busy in peak school holiday season, however it is popular for good reason. It is one of the most attractive parts of Britain, with beautiful dramatic coastline, quaint fishing villages, river estuaries, beaches and hidden coves where smugglers brought ashore their booty!
Inland the wild moorland of Bodmin and Dartmoor have just as much romantic association. Many famous writers have set their tales in these parts, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The Hound of the Baskervilles) and Daphne Dumaurier (Jamaica Inn) to name but two.
Here mainland Britain stops at Lands End just across the water from the lovely Scilly Isles.
