Lancashire and the Lake District

Counties: Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside.

Principal towns: Manchester, Liverpool.

The main attraction in this area is the spectacular scenery of the Lake District National Park. John Constable declared it to be ‘the finest scenery that ever was’ and painted many scenes of the area. It is also an inspiration for many authors and poets, notably William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

People come to walk the wild fells (hills) and green valleys, to partake in water sports on the large number of lakes, or just to explore and soak up the beauty.

Liverpool is worth a visit if you are a fan of The Beatles. Manchester is a cosmopolitan city with good shopping, restaurants and museums.
