Counties: Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire.

Principal towns:Oxford, Reading, Milton Keynes, Windsor.

Due to its proximity to London, this area has some of the finest great houses in the country, the most grand perhaps being Blenheim Palace, built by Queen Anne for the 1st Duke of Marlborough and the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill.

Oxford, home to Britain’s first university founded in the 12th century, is dominated by its 36 colleges. Many of the college grounds, and some of the buildings, are open to the public. However, a word of warning. Although Oxford is a beautiful and interesting city, due to its easy access from London it is often packed with tourists.

This area also has many pretty villages and small towns, with a wide variety of architectural styles accumulated over hundreds of years.

  • Blenheim Palace - one of England's largest houses, built circa 1720
  • Radcliffe Camera - 'camera' translates from Latin as 'room' or 'chamber'. Built in 1737-1749 to house the Radcliffe Science Library.
  • Windsor Castle - the largest inhabited castle in the world. One of the principal official residences of the British monarch.
