Republic of Ireland – South
Ancient province of Munster
The south west is the most visited part of Ireland, which is entirely understandable as here lie the magnificent peninsula’s of The Dingle, the Iveragh, the Beara and other smaller peninsula’s. The south coast is less spectacular but has some lovely beaches and fishing villages. Here also lies Ireland’s second city, Cork, which has a delightful old quarter and a vibrant arts and culture scene. The south east was strategically important for many centuries due to its proximity to Britain and to Europe, the legacy of which is the remains of castles and fine mansions belonging to the Anglo-Irish landowners.
