Ancient province of Connaught
In the West lies the wildest, least cultivated parts of the Irish landscape. The Connemara National Park is outstandingly beautiful; rugged landscape, rocky shoreline, lakes, mountains and ponies on the heathland. Off the convoluted coast are many islands, the Aran islands, (as in the of knitwear) being the most famous. Going south you encounter the strange limestone landscape of the Burren National park, a must for geologists and botanists, and the dramatic coastal cliffs of county Clare.
