The East Midlands is a region of stark contrasts, from the wild unspoiled beauty of Britain's first National Park, the Derbyshire Peak District, to grim industrial cities, which are best missed, unless one is particularly interested in the industrial revolution. The city of Lincoln, with its magnificent cathedral, is a notable exception.
The Peak District is best explored on foot. It's wild moors and wooded dales offer a wealth of walking trails. There is something for everyone here, from experienced rock climbers to family ramblers. As it is the most accessible National Park to London and the populous Midland towns, it can be crowded, but it is a good option for a foray into the countryside without travelling too far.
