In researching the last blog entry on place names I used the Domesday Book web site. It dawned on me that many people, although they may have heard of it, may not know exactly what it is.
The Domesday book was a land survey of England commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1085 to find out the extent of the wealth in his fairly newly conquered territory and to assess how much tax he could raise to defend the country against outside threats such as Scandinavia.
Our own village of Barford is listed in the book. More of this on later blogs.
