Most people believe that mainland Britain has not been invaded since 1066. Well that is not true! In 1797 Wales was invaded by the French. They attacked at Fishgaurd in Pembrokeshore, on the south west coast.
Legend has it that the women folk saved the day. They flocked to the town on hearing the news and apparantly the French mistook their traditional dress of red shawls and black hats, for infantry uniforms. Jemima Nicholas, a cobbler, was said to have captured a dozen demoralised French soldiers and secured them in St. Mary’s Church.
